Cinema lovers know that some films are better known for their theatrical runs than others, but which ones are the most famous?
The answer can have a big impact on how you see your favorite movies in the future.
Read on for the definitive ranking.
The 20 Best Original Films of All Time: The 25 Best Original Movies of All-Time list was compiled by Ars Technic’s staff of writers, editors, and producers.
We’ve collected our picks from more than a dozen categories, including best known films, classics, and shorts.
All of our writers’ criteria are subjective.
We asked them to rate their favorites from a simple “best film” to “most famous movie.”
We also included some additional criteria, including: what made them famous, and the overall quality of the movie.
(For example, if a film’s best-selling author was a fan of its director or screenwriter, we ranked the film based on the amount of attention the author received.
For example, the film with the most pageviews for its writer was the one with the best-ever film-making career.)
We included these factors, along with the total number of theaters where the film was released, to make sure the final score reflects the true level of popularity.
(As of August 10, 2019, there are still nearly 2.3 million theaters in the United States.)
Here’s the list, in alphabetical order.
